17th Ave is a hub for some of Calgary’s most
trendy restaurants that don’t have a problem attracting a crowd. When we heard about
The Coup + Meet, a fully vegetarian, organic, and locally sourced restaurant… we were definitely intrigued.
Especially since it would stand amongst pubs full of chicken wings and
restaurants with mouthwatering steaks. We decided to check The Coup out on a Thursday night after work. The restaurant is located on 924 17th Ave SW, close to Cibo Calgary and across from Roosevelt. When we walked in we saw that it has a fun vibe and was packed with people in full gear to get their weekend started.

We tried to take this being extremely discrete and hoping that no one would ask us questions about why we were photographing them having their meal... |
We took a look at the drink menu and saw that it has a variety of cocktails, wines, and beers. We started off our evening with just a simple Pinot Grigio. Not to be boring… but sometimes that’s all you want to unwind a bit. Just like Lay’s chips though, you can’t just have one. Our server told us that they were featuring a Cucumber Gin Martini that night - how could we not try it? The drink was crisp and refreshing and would definitely taste great on a beach. What is neat about The Coup is that they focus on making unique cocktails and frequently feature new ones. We enjoy following their Instagram (@thecoupcalgary) where they post their newest creations!

This was our favourite dish of the night, the Spanakopita! It had all the right ingredients and flavours and for a minute we thought we might be in Greek heaven. |
The feature appetizer of the evening was Spanakopita on a
bed of salad and berry vinigarette with a side of creamy tzatitki. Being big
fans of Greek food we did not even hesitate to order. The appetizer came out
fairly quickly and disappeared even faster. We absolutely loved this dish (not
even exaggerating). The soft yet crispy shell with gooey cheese and spinach
filling was so satisfying. Not sure if we thought that because we were
fairly hungry from saving our appetite for the meal… or if it was actually that
good… but we will go with the latter.
The dinner menu includes a variety of different cuisines.
There is pizza for Italian lover, a burger for those in the mood for comfort
food, and a quesadilla for those craving Mexican. What is unique about the menu items though is that they are a fusion of different cuisines. Though all these choices seemed appealing to us... We chose none of them. We
landed on the Dragon Bowl with Coconut Green Curry, the Pseudo Sushi, and
Tempeh Shwarma. Our favorite out of the three was the Dragon Bowl. We would
think it was also a healthier option as it had a generous amount of steamed
vegetables along with stir-fried tofu on a bed of wild rice. The Pseudo Sushi
and Tempeh Shwarma impressed us as they are both dishes that are typically not prepared as vegetarian meals. We both admit that we did not miss the meat in those!
Overall we really enjoyed our evening at The Coup. It has a cool atmosphere
and diverse menu. We recommend you make life a little easier for your vegetarian
friends and take them out to The Coup where they can order more than 2 things
off the menu and do not have to worry about any cross contamination :) Here's what us and the Internet food gods think about the restaurant:
